The meanings attributed to “development”, the object of human right recognized in the 1986 Declaration, have undergone significant changes in recent decades. The most recent interpretations, incorporated in the United Nations governance instruments, envisage the phenomenon through the lens of sustainability and balance of different dimensions. This article analyzes the social dimension of the human right to sustainable development from the perspective of its realization. Dialogue, mainly, with the work of Kristen Magis and Craig Shinn, explores the notions of human welfare, equity, democratic government and democratic civil society, principles that shape the social dimension of sustainable development, to, subsequently, point out initiatives from contemporary Brazilian reality, which corroborate social sustainability. To achieve the goal set, it uses the deductive method, in qualitative research, which uses the bibliographic technique.
Key-words: Pluridimensional sustainable development. Social dimension. Human rights.
