Abstract

The article is a critique of the liberal conception of rights, which emphasizes individual autonomy, free will and a neutral public space. The consequence is the erosion of democracy, community, and the loss of social bonds between people. As a contrast, the article outlines feature of the democratic conception of rights, which refutes some theses held by the liberal conception. The democratic conception is oriented towards the creation of the common good in the project of self-government. In addition to theoretical considerations, the paper also contains two practical examples that pinpoint the inadequacy of the liberal conception of rights.
