This article analyzes the crime of contempt in the Inter-American System of Human Rights, addressing the regulation and interpretation of the exercise of freedom of expression and its limits at the international level, comparing them with the Brazilian position in relation to the application of laws that criminalize the contempt of civil or military public officials existing in the country, and analyzing the challenges to preserve the effectiveness of the exercise of freedom of expression in the light of the international commitments assumed by Brazil.
